Book Covers

How your book covers impact your sales. Avoid making these mistakes!

As an avid reader of ebooks and Kindle Unlimited content, I have noticed that a lot of book covers on Amazon Kindle are nearly impossible to read.

This can hurt your sales for a few reasons:

  1. When readers are scrolling through the Kindle app, they only see the cover. If readers can’t tell what the title is or who the author is, we won’t click on it to learn more.

  2. The algorithms won’t promote it as much if there isn’t a sufficient contrast ratio between the text and the background. Google is especially strict about this.

  3. It makes the cover inaccessible for the vision-impaired. While I am not vision-impaired, I turn down the white balance on my phone at night so that it’s not as bright. That makes it even harder to read the title and author name if there isn’t enough contrast between the text and background.

  4. I know it is tempting to use pretty fonts, but make sure they are still easy to read. (Again, keep in mind those who are vision-impaired or neurodivergent, such as those who have dyslexia, ADHD, etc.)

  5. People who read on an e-reader will only see the cover in black & white, so if there is not enough contrast, the cover will be illegible.

In general with marketing, you don’t want to make someone have to work to understand what you’re selling. You often only have a second to make an impression.

To recap,

  • Make sure there is a high contrast ratio between the text and the background.

  • Make sure the text is large enough to read when the cover is a thumbnail.

  • Make sure the font is easy to read.

  • Make sure the cover also looks good in black & white.
